UNIDO hires CMCS chair as national expert

United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) has hired Sohel Manzur, Chairman of the Centre for Media and Communication Studies (CMCS), as a National Expert to conduct a case study on its quality support project in Bangladesh.

A service agreement to this effect was signed between Antonios Levissianos of UNIDO and Sohel Manzur of CMCS in mid-May.

Under the agreement with UNIDO, the CMCS Chairman is to interact with the targeted government and private institutions, implementation partners and beneficiaries of the Bangladesh Quality Support Programme (BQSP) to assess the impact of the project.

UNIDO started implementing the project in Bangladesh in 2006 in cooperation with the Ministry of Industries, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Ministry of Textiles and Jute and the Ministry of Commerce. First phase of the project ends on June 30, 2010.

International Trade Centre UNCTAD/WTO is the other implementing agency, while the Euroepan Union (EU) provided fund for the project.

Under the project, UNIDO enhanced the capacity of the Bangladesh Accreditation Board (BAB) and the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institute (BSTI) by providing technical assistance to the institutions.

UNIDO also provided support for quality improvement and control management in sectors, such as fisheries, textiles and health through undertaking training and research and developing curriculum and modern facilities for textile education.
